Blade & Soul – Coming this Winter
If you’re a gold farmer, you know that there is a major influx in demand for new games and new expansions. Making a profit off of gold farming is a lot easier when you start playing and mastering a game that has just been released.
Blade & Soul is finally coming to the West this winter.
A game set in the Ancient Eastern world, Blade & Soul is an MMORPG from NCSoft (the makers of Guild Wars). The game is a huge hit in the East and has finally made its way to the West. Unlike other titles, this title is a little different in the gameplay and lure behind the characters played.
First, players will be:
- Martial arts experts, destroying their foes.
- Use a combo system for wild, powerful moves.
- Channel inner chi to perform supernatural abilities.
This is a cross between the beauty of Final Fantasy and the insane acrobatics and moves you would expect in a fighting game. Players are even able to use their chi to perform feats, such as running across water or even running up walls.
The first time in America and Europe, gamers will be flocking to a title that is already loved in the East.
Blade and Soul Never Released in NA and Europe
Available since 2012, Blade & Soul was a major hit in China for well over a year before any news of further adaptations were made.
A year after the game was released, information starting pouring in about the game only being released in:
There were no other territories mentioned, and even Russia was a surprising choice. All three versions of the game are based off of the Chinese version of the game, and speculation about an English version being released in 2014 quickly died down.
The 2013 earnings reports for the company showed that while the game was performing well, it could not compete with the likes of GW2 or other games by the company. This led many people to believe that the game would never make it past China, Japan, Taiwan and Russia. News of the English release was verified in a May 20th blog post that showed everyone that not only is the game being ported to an English version, but French and German will be added as well.
The company has never came out and stated why it took so long for the game to hit the North American market, but it can be assumed that the company thought the Asian feel of the game would turn many North American players away.
NCSoft Q1 2015 Earnings
Understanding why after so much time Blade & Soul is coming to North America is simple – look at the company Quarter 1 earnings reports for 2015. For gold farming, I am going to make this as simple as possible:
Sales per game is divided up in the following way:
- Lineage 1 is the clear winner with 66,000 sales
- Blade & Soul is second with 26,000 sales
- GW2 is third with 20,000 sales
- Aion is third with 18,200 sales
Interestingly, B & S has seen its sales increase from 19,000 to 24,000, and now to 26,000 sales in the latest quarter. In retrospect, the game has sold more copies in the last quarter of 2014 and the first quarter of 2015 than Guild Wars 2.
Players can be selective when farming gold, but a little insight into B & S shows that the game is going to be very profitable for NCSoft and gold sellers.
Judging Your Prices
Gold farming will need to start over again in the North American market due to different servers. This means that you’ll have to judge your gold prices on: demand and current market value. This will be very difficult at first, but you’ll be able to judge your prices early with the right amount of research.
Start off by:
- Searching for sites selling B & S gold.
- Analyze the pricing structure.
- Convert to USD when necessary.
Currently, the prices on Chinese servers are insanely high. For example, the price for just 80 in-game gold is $9.95 in USD. For gold farmers that are seasoned, you’ll be able to make a lot of money, especially during the first few months when the game is released.
It’s going to be a profitable season.
Many gold sellers will start with the same price as the conversion rate above and adjust as necessary. These are prices on servers that are in China and have been around for the last 3 years. During the first few months when gold is scarce, you’ll be able to make a lot of money fast if you’re smart with your pricing.
It’s all economics at this point. You’ll be able to undercut prices to sell gold faster, but never go too low, or you’ll devalue the currency and harm the market for everyone. I recommend only undercutting when you want to make a fast sale, and only undercutting by 1% – 5% to keep the going rate high.
The first trailer for Blade & Soul has been released, and the company has stated that they will be revealing more information in the coming weeks and months.
One thing that all gold farmers should have learned from this is that you can find hidden gems in games that aren’t currently available in your market. Those that have watched NCSoft’s earnings reports will have known that the game is picking up steam, and a release to North America may make the game even more popular than Guild Wars 2, which is a major feat for any MMORPG on the market.
Not to mention that Blade & Soul will be free to play, so players will be more willing to spend money buying gold. After all, gamers are willing to pay subscription fees for great games, and when it’s free, you’ll have an even larger player base to sell your gold to.
Of course, you can also wait to see if B & S gold sells well in North America before deciding to farm gold, but you do so at a risk of losing initial sales.
